Adult Leisure Learning in Taos

Ever thought about taking a Leisure Learning class at the Doel Reed Center in Taos? A Pueblo Pottery Journey was one of the classes offered at the July 2021 Leisure Learning session.

Meet Terri Cooper

“An incomparable learning experience is how I would describe the Pueblo Pottery class taught by Dr. Bruce Bernstein. The class was part history, part anthropology and part art.  After putting Pueblo pottery into an historical context, we were led on a field trip on a somewhat arduous climb up a plateau into an ancestral site of an ancient village of the ancestors of the San Ildefonso Pueblo. Through the voices, skills and artistry of contemporary pottery artists we learned of the methods of hand-gathering and processing the materials from the land that form the basis of the clay from which the pottery is made today with further instruction on mixing of glazes, hand polishing and traditional methods of firing vessels to create a finished work of incredible beauty.  Every aspect of the intricate process to bring a beautiful piece of art to life is amazing. It is deserving of admiration and respect. To top it all off, under the supervision of the visiting artists, each participant was given some clay and was able to create a small handmade vessel as a souvenir of our class. We had the opportunity to walk away with the feeling of being an 'artist'.”
