OSU students in Taos

Editorial Styling for Merchandising

Instructor: Cosette Joyner Armstrong, Ph.D.

This course reviewed the elements of editorial styling for fashion merchandising, including photography basics, focusing on image production for digital and print media. The students will learn on-location styling competences, including location scouting, working with natural light, and “roadside” photoshoot management. This course included hands-on learning experiences in which students were required to gather inspiration and broadly develop a concept for an editorial fashion photoshoot, create a detailed implementation plan, source garments, and work with a professional photographer to conduct their photoshoot on location.

Writing the Native City from New Mexico

Instructor: Lindsey Claire Smith, Ph.D.

Students studied the New Mexico writings of Indigenous writers from Oklahoma, considering them in the critical framework of the regional, the urban, and settler colonialism, as well as the Indigenous  methodologies and the unique arts and cultures of northern New Mexico.

Both classes combined on May 25th for a lecture presented by Jill Momaday, the 2022 Jim and Linda Burke Visiting Scholar. Ms. Momaday also delivered a very insightful lecture at the Harwood Museum in Taos that was open to the community.

Upcoming Academic Credit Course (July 5-15)

Large Format Analog Photography/The Camera View

Photography course in TaosOSU students will explore the unique aesthetic and technical possibilities of the 4x5 view camera. This classic photographic tool requires deliberate control over all aspects of the image making process — working on a tripod, composing the image upside down on the ground glass, exposing a single piece of sheet film at a time.

The opportunity for OSU students to study in culturally rich northern New Mexico enriches educational experience. In most cases, students require scholarship assistance in order to enroll. If you would like to donate to this scholarship fund, your gift will be greatly appreciated.
