As part of the Jim and Linda Burke Visiting Scholar program, Andrew Gulliford, Ph.D., recently spoke to OSU students and the Taos community on July 10th, 2023, at the Society of the Muse of the Southwest (SOMOS) in Taos.

Dr. Gulliford’s talk titled, “La Estrella del Pastor: Hispano Sheepherders: Culture, Tradition, and Sheepscapes,”  discussed the history of sheep grazing across New Mexico and Colorado. He introduced the concept of “sheepscapes.” Lonely sheep herders in isolated high latitude grazing areas modified the landscape with a fascinating array of cairns and aspen tree carvings - some which remain today as a testament to their presence.

Dr. Andrew Gulliford is a professor of History and Environmental Studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango. HIs book, The Wooly West, won the 2019 National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Western Heritage Award for the Best Nonfiction Book.
