Taos and the OSU Doel Reed Center
“Meet Emily, Taos Art Museum's Summer Collections Intern!
Thanks to the generosity of Oklahoma State University's Doel Reed Center, Emily Singleton joined us this summer as a Collections Intern.
Emily has been doing an incredible job photographing the Museum's entire collection, inventorying objects, and conducting research to ensure the collection's database contains complete and accurate information. Ultimately, we plan on putting our collection online for all to enjoy.
We're grateful for all of Emily's hard work and wish her the absolute best as she continues pursuing a BFA at OSU this fall. We'll miss having you!”
Taos Art Museum at Fechin House
There has been a kindred relationship between Oklahoma State University (A&M) and
the Taos community dating back to the 1950’s when Doel Reed and family began summering
in northern New Mexico. Mr. Reed was a professor in the Art Department in Stillwater
but loved the Taos community as a place where he could further practice and develop
his reputation as a renowned artist and printmaker. Upon his retirement in 1958, Reed purchased a property and became fully immersed in
the Taos art community. His daughter Martha Reed joined her mother and father in Taos
and became a well known fashion designer under the label Martha’s of Taos. Both Doel Reed and Martha Reed are fondly remembered and revered for their contributions
to the Taos art community.
Upon the death of her parents, Martha Reed gifted the family compound to Oklahoma State University as a tribute to the legacy of her father. OSU gladly accepted Martha's generous gift and embarked on a path of supporting education in the Taos community as part of its Land Grant University mission.
The OSU Doel Reed Center in Taos offers free workshops to young art students. The center often invites locals to hear lectures presented by its Visiting Scholars program.
OSU recently extended an internship to BFA student, Emily Singleton, to summer in Taos and catalog the Taos Art Museum art collection. The OSU Doel Reed Center in Taos supported Emily with a small stipend and housing allowance.
The Taos Art Museum at Fechin House is currently hosting Sun Patterns, Dark Canyon: The Paintings and Aquatints of Doel Reed (1894-1985).Learn more about the exhibit.
