Are You a Hiker?

Visitors to Taos have many opportunities to explore galleries, museums, pueblos and boutiques featuring local artisans, but if you’re an outdoor enthusiast and enjoy hiking, you’ll surely want to experience several of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world.

Person Hiking in TaosTwo of the most iconic trails are Williams Lake and Wheeler Peak, both sharing the same trailhead located above Taos Ski Valley. The hikes feature a 2,979 feet vertical ascent to the summit of Wheeler Peak (13,167’), the highest point in New Mexico. The panoramic views of the Sangre De Cristo range are breathtaking, as are the final 1000 feet of the climb to the top.

There are approximately sixty well marked and maintained trails to choose from in the Taos area. Several shops in Taos cater to hikers and will happily consult on trails best suited for your experience level. You may want to visit one to purchase needed supplies for your trek. Don’t forget sunscreen, trail snacks and hydration needs!
