The OSU Doel Reed Center in Taos announces Leisure Learning classes for alumni and friends, July 25 to 29, 2022. If interested in traveling to magical Taos, New Mexico this upcoming summer, why not include a bit of learning. Join other OSU Cowboys and friends for a memorable week of touring, hospitality, site visits and education.
Pueblo Worlds: An Overview of Pueblo Indian History and Culture
Through field trips and discussion, the class will explore the prehistory, history, and contemporary lives and cultures of the Pueblo Indians of the Southwest.
Navajo Style Weaving
Instructor: Charlotte Shroyer, PhD
Modern-day Navajo weaving incorporates complex designs and a variety of colors. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of Navajo style weaving using a tapestry loom.
Fly Fishing
Instructor: Nick Streit, Taos Fly Shop
Beginners and intermediates will learn the basics or hone their existing skills on northern New Mexico waters. All necessary equipment furnished, if needed.
New Mexico Cooking
Learn about historical influences on New Mexico food and prepare contemporary New Mexico recipes. Experience hands-on cooking with New Mexico chefs.
The Art of Aquatint
Instructor: Jennifer Lynch, MFA
The class includes demonstrations of traditional aquatint printing and hands-on work with contemporary variations of the aquatint process. Students will work with copper plate drypoint and etching processes to craft their project.
Doel Reed and his Contemporaries (1940s - 1980s)
Instructor: Rebecca Brienen, PhD
The class will study Doel Reed’s New Mexican career, from his early involvement in the artistic scene in Taos as well as his national audience. Trips to several area museums and galleries to study works of art are included in the curriculum.
