Hollye Goddard, OSU alumni, discusses the perks of Leisure Learning at the Doel Reed Center.

Leisure Learning has something for every OSU alum

Tuesday, February 2, 2021

Although the OSU Doel Reed Center in Taos is primarily for students to study in a very unique setting, its also a place where alumni and friends can gather several times each year to enjoy a class taught by highly qualified instructors. I’ve never missed a class since its inception in 2012. I was an art student at OSU so I’m usually drawn to one of the visual arts classes. The Taos landscape is so inspiring to me and I can’t wait to return.

There are typically six classes offered in the summer and several more in the fall. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, the fall classes are amazing. The aspen are changing and the crystal clear streams are flowing. It’s a photographers paradise. The class offering vary from year to year but some of the favorites are Fly Fishing and New Mexico Cooking. The classes typically include guided visits to several local museums and galleries. And there’s always time to visit the many quaint little shops featuring local artisans and their creations.

Many of the class offerings will feature lectures on the local culture. Taos has a blending of so many cultures and it really takes a local authority to fully explain this interesting aspect of the region. I’ve never been disappointed in the quality of any of instruction.

The week typically begins with an opening session where we’re introduced to the instructors. President Burns Hargis and First Cowgirl Ann Hargis usually attend and we get to hear an update from Burns about our alma mater. They are both huge supporters of the center and will often enroll in one of the classes. The Monday-Friday classes are very casual and usually start out from the center about 9:00 and usually concluded late afternoon. Wednesday is usually a free day. I usually end up a some of my favorite boutiques or enjoying a visit to one of the many galleries. Friday evenings are usually reserved for a get together to relive the week and bid farewell to our new Cowboy friends. Farewell probably isn’t a good choice of words. It’s usually “until I see you again next year.” You wouldn’t believe how many return year after year.

It truly is an amazing week. If you have any questions or comments, I’d love to hear from you. Simply leave your comment below. If you’ve attended a Leisure Learning class in the past, leave comment about your class experience. Thanks for visiting STVDIO DRC.
