Scholar Development Writing Workshop - 2018
Scholar Development Writing Workshop
In January 2018, OSU’s Doel Reed Center for the Arts (DRCA) hosted the Office of Scholar Development’s one-of-a-kind Writers’ Workshop for prestigious scholarship applicants. This tranquil, picturesque setting offers students an ideal location for the deep reflection and careful articulation demanded by the competitive scholarship application process. Dr. Carol Moder (Director of the Center), Dr. Keith Garbutt (Dean of The Honors College), and Jessica Sullins (Director of Scholar Development) joined forces to guide institutional nominees for the Truman, Goldwater, and Udall Scholarships through their application materials.
During the three-day workshop the students crafted the written components of the applications they began on campus, and in the spirit of the workshop format, sharing with peers in a supportive, respectful environment. The group also had the opportunity to explore the unique culture of Taos, including excursions to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, the Taos Art Museum at Fechin House, and San Francisco de Asis Mission Church. This year, the students also enjoyed engaging conversation with Dr. Ed Walkiewicz (former Director of the Center) and his wife, Sally, at a final lunch at historic Doc Martin’s restaurant.
