2025 Hargis Fellow
Stephanie Choi, Assistant Professor of English, holds a MFA from the University of Utah. She was the 2023-24 Poet-in-Residence at Sewanee: The University of the South and one of Poets and Writers Magazine’s Debut Poets of 2024. She accepted an appointment at OSU in fall 2024.
Her current project Maiden Voyage is a poetry manuscript that engages in documentary
modes and practices of writing-that is, she uses primary and secondary sources found
in the archive and crafts the lyric within and out of them. Working in the late 19th/early
20th century archives-specifically within American History and the Chinese Exclusion
Act.
The course Professor Choi is proposing is an upper-level poetry workshop focused on
ekphrastic poetry-that is, poetry written about works of visual art. This tradition
can be traced to Homer's Iliad, with the description of Achilles' shield, and continued
on in the Western tradition with poems like Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and later,
W.H. Auden's "Musee des Beaux Arts" and John Ashberry's "Self-Portrait in a Convex
Mirror."
