Rio Grande del Norte National Monument and Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument: Stories from New Mexico’s National Conservation Lands

with Dr. Andrew Gulliford

October 15, 2026 4 PM CT

In this talk based on his 2026 book, Lonesome Landscapes: Stories from National Conservation Land, Andrew Gulliford blends scholarship with storytelling. Drawing from archives, interviews, and field reporting, he reveals the unsung heroes who safeguarded the Bureau of Land Management’s vast National Conservation Lands, from pioneering rangers to grassroots advocates in Native American and Hispanic communities.

Andrew Gulliford is professor of history at Fort Lewis College. His books include Boomtown Blues: Colorado Oil Shale, Sacred Objects and Sacred Places: Preserving Tribal Traditions, The Woolly West: Colorado’s Hidden History of Sheepscapes, and Bears Ears: Landscape of Refuge and Resistance. Gulliford’s article, “Father & daughter artists and the Doel Reed Center in Taos” ran in The Durango Herald and paints a vivid picture of Doel and Martha Reed’s lives in Taos. He was the Jim & Linda Burke Visiting Scholar for the Doel Reed Center in 2023.
